Know About One Of The First Female Physicians Of India, On Whom A Venus Crater Is Named In a country whose history spans hundreds of years of exponential inequality, where customs and culture have a strong influence on the social and political life of the people, the social mixture cobwebs make it difficult for a woman to escape discrimination and reach better opportunities to empower themselves. In times when society was largely patriarchal and conservative, there was a woman who not only braved the most stringent odds but also etched her name in the field of science. Dr Anandibai Joshi is the first Indian female physician. The Venus crater named as Joshee is a tribute to Anandi Gopal Joshi. Born on 31 March 1865 in Kalyan, Maharashtra, Anandibai was married at the age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi who was twenty years senior to her. He also helped her receive education in medicine. Gopalrao encouraged Anandibai to study and in 1880 sent a letter to a well-known American ...

I Kill Giants

Image
I Kill Giants  Is a Strange, Moving Tale of Childhood Grief and Fantasy  feels secret and dangerous, like a VHS tape dug out of a dusty crate at a yard sale; it’s the kind of movie you ended up watching every week as a kid just because of how weird it made you feel. The debut feature of director Anders Walter is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Joe Kelly (who also adapted the screenplay), and it’s at once familiar and unsettling, with shades of  Pan’s Labyrinth  and  Return to Oz.  But what gives it its chills has less to do with its freaky creatures, and more with the troubled state of its young heroine. Young protagonists escaping into fantasy in the face of traumatic reality is a common theme in children’s fiction, but few films take their heroine’s mental state seriously enough to interrogate it the way  I Kill Giants  does. Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe) is a wild, moody tween living with her older sister and ...

John Bolton

Image
John Bolton, Trump’s ultra-hawkish new national security adviser, explained President Donald Trump has appointed John Bolton, the former US envoy to the UN, as his national security adviser, politically reanimating a strident Bush administration neo-conservative. The decision comes as a surprise, not least because Mr Trump was reported to have decided against naming Mr Bolton secretary of state last year as he disliked his walrus moustache. Mr Bolton's new role will prove controversial since he remains an unapologetic cheerleader of the 2003 Iraq war, which the US president himself once lambasted as "a big mistake". Known for that bushy facial hair, curmudgeonly manner and tousled appearance, Mr Bolton is praised by conservative admirers as a straight-talking foreign policy hawk. But the Republican was also once memorably branded by a cable television host as "a massive neocon on steroids". Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul described Mr...

Deadpool 2

Image
Things We Learned From the  Deadpool 2  Trailer If you’ll recall, 2016’s  Deadpool  more or less beat America over the head with its marketing campaign. For well over a year before its release, the physical and digital worlds were inundated with viral messaging starring the sophomoric superhero. It worked, of course: The relatively low-budget film  became one of the most profitable  that the superhero genre has ever seen. In comparison,  Deadpool 2  has weirdly flown under the radar. There haven’t been nearly as many bits of promotion for it, we didn’t know the official title until quite recently, and we didn’t even have a formal trailer until this morning. But now that the teaser has dropped, it’s time to dig into it and see what it reveals about this scatological sequel. Photo: 20th Century Fox We will, indeed, be meeting X-Force. After Fox released a quasi-trailer last month, astute viewers noted that Wade Wilson ...

Dwight Howard

Image
Holy Shit, Dwight Howard Played Like It Was 2008 Tonight Dwight Howard—the same 32-year-old that has spent the last several seasons brewing beef as he scoots from team to team, that Dwight Howard—made a little history tonight. With a 32-point, 30-rebound game in the Hornets’ win over the Nets, he put together the first 30-point, 30-rebound performance that the NBA has seen in eight years, and only the second one since 1982. In front of a sparsely populated crowd, thanks to New York’s snowstorm today, Charlotte came back from a 23-point deficit to win by a score of 111-105. Just 123 more 30-30 nights until Howard will catch up to Wilt Chamberlain there.
